South-Eastern Europe (SEE)

University-wide strategic focus on South-Eastern Europe

For many years, the University of Graz has been linked to the regions of South-Eastern Europe by an intensive cooperative partnership. In 2000, the University of Graz – the first university in German-speaking countries – underlined the importance of this positive collaboration by defining a university-wide focus on South-EasternEurope (SEE).

Thanks to its expertise and knowledge of the needs and the potential for cooperation with South-Eastern Europe, the University of Graz has long been a trailblazer for implementing the vision of pan-European integration within the EU. In order to reach this goal, a vast number of measures with, for and about South-Eastern Europe, such as cooperations, grants and research projects, were taken to do justice to the University of Graz’s traditional task of being the bridge to South-Eastern Europe.

Centre for South-East European Studies

Activities have been undertaken that are targeted towards making visible, coordinating and disseminating the existing measures and new projects have been initiated in order to further strengthen this university-wide focus. The opening of the inter-faculty Centre for South-East European Studies in 2008 can be considered a milestone. Since then, the Center has managed to establish itself as a place for encounter and a bridge between Central and South-Eastern Europe, a site where university activities are pooled and interdisciplinary collaboration takes places. The activities of the Centre include lecture series such as “Brownbag Seminars: Current research on South-Eastern Europe” and the public discussion forum “Historical and currentdevelopments in South-Eastern Europe and in the Middle East”.

By initiating and organizing projects with a focus on South-Eastern Europe, the University of Graz has positioned itself as a successful and competent partner.
