Arrival in Graz

Having safely arrived in Graz and reassured your family and friends of your safe arrival, make sure you take care of the necessary first steps in getting settled as indicated below.

Make sure you take care of the relevant dorm payments according to the guidelines of the dorm you are living in. You will receive information on how to proceed via email before arrival and from the dorm administration during check-in. If you have any questions concerning payment procedures, the room or the dorm as such, please get in touch with the dorm administration directly.

All students have to register with the city of Graz within the first 3 days of their stay. Some dorms provide students with the form they need to fill in (“Meldezettel”) in their arrival packs.

  • EU/EEA students as well as students from NON-EU/EEA countries also holding an EU/EEA nationality and valid passport of the relevant EU/EEA country (dual citizenship) staying for more than 3 months have to register with the province of Styria within the first 4 months of their stay by applying for a so-called “Anmeldebescheinigung”. You need to have received the Anmeldebescheinigung before the end of the 3-month period, so make sure you apply early on during your stay. More information will be provided during Welcome Weeks.

  • Non-EU/EEA students staying for two semesters and allowed to enter Austria for three months without the need for a visa (check LIST whether this applies to you) can apply for a residence permit after arrival in Graz.
  • If your country is not on the list, you will have applied for the residence permit via the Austrian embassy in your home country, will have entered with a visa and can go to pick up your residence permit from the residence permit office in Graz (see address below) after Welcome Events. In order to do so you will need some of the documentation that will be available after the Welcome Week.

All students are advised to open an Austrian bank account to make their payments to the dorm and any other payments.  All students receiving a scholarship from the University of Graz must open an Austrian bank account. Note that no transfer will be made to bank accounts in other countries.

If you receive a scholarship from the University of Graz:

  • Open up a bank account and provide us with the following information/documents as soon as possible after arrival:
    - your completed bank details form incl. account details (name of the bank, IBAN, SWIFT/BIC). It is advisable to have the bank provide you with a print-off of these account details!
    - Copy of the “Meldebestätigung” (registration with the City of Graz)
  • Payments are made on a monthly basis (mid of the month for the following month).
EXCEPTION 1: Erasmus+ International scholarships are transferred in a different manner: 70% at the beginning of the stay, 30% towards the end of the stay once the student has fulfilled the requirements (online report, changes to the learning agreement, if any occur, signed by all parties).
EXCEPTION 2: Note that the scholarship payment for January cannot be made in December and will therefore happen no earlier than first half of January. Please budget accordingly!
    - EXCEPTION 3: The last scholarship rate in the context of the Go Styria program will only be paid out after the necessary documents have been handed in.
