Go Styria is a scholarship scheme for outstanding students from South-Eastern Europe, supported by funding from Land Steiermark. The scheme awards grants for research mobility periods at the University of Graz by master’s students, doctoral students and post-docs from South-Eastern Europe.
There is currently no open call for applications.
Next call for academic year 2025/26 expected to open in spring 2025.

Prerequisites
- You are a student at a university in South-Eastern Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey) and will still be registered there in the next academic year
- You are already working on your master’s or doctoral thesis
- You would like to conduct research as an exchange student at the University of Graz, with the intention of completing your degree afterwards at your home university.
Attention:
- If you are selected for the Go Styria scholarship programme you will NOT be eligible for any other scholarship grant for the same mobility period/semester at the University of Graz (e.g. Erasmus+, Erasmus+ International, CEEPUS...).
- If you are enrolled as a degree student at the University of Graz, you are NOT eligible to apply

- You must have completed the application as a data entry and uploaded all documents in the online application no later than the last day of the application deadline . Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
- You do not need to send paper copies by post . Follow the instructions in the online application system and upload all documents to Mobility Online.
Application process
Step 1: Activate the online application
Please send an e-mail to incoming.exchange(at)uni-graz.at with the following information:
- First name and surname (as in your passport)
- Date of birth (day.month.year)
- Scan of passport/national ID-card
- Home university (official name in the relevant national language and in English or German)
- Level of degree programme and field of study
- Time frame of your planned research mobility: winter or summer semester, duration, planned period
- Please confirm by e-mail that you will still be registered at your home university in the academic year you are applying for
The information provided in your e-mail will be used to check your eligibility under the guidelines of this programme. If you meet the requirements you will receive an e-mail with access details for your online application through Mobility-Online.
Step 2: Enter the data required to complete your online application
Complete your application in Mobility-Online, using the help information provided.
Step 3: Request invitation letter
Please contact an institute or the relevant academic advisor to find out if there is a professor at the University of Graz who is willing to supervise your planned research and provide the required invitation letter. You need a written invitation from the professor concerned, with his/her signature and official stamp. Please use the invitation letter (Betreuungszusage) template which is available for download from Mobility-Online.
We recommend you explain in your e-mail that you are applying for a Go Styria scholarship, and attach a detailed research proposal (max. 3 pages), your curriculum vitae and the template for invitation letter (available for download from Mobility-Online).
Step 4: Complete your online application and upload the documents required
Upload all your application documents to Mobility-Online by the submission deadline.
Duration
- The scholarship is available for a maximum of 4 months. Shorter mobility periods are possible
Prerequisites
You can apply for the Go Styria scholarship programme if:
- you hold an academic position at a university in South-Eastern Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey),
- you have completed your doctorate with very good results before the beginning of your scholarship period. Your doctorate should have been completed not more than one year prior to the date of your application.
Important notes:
- The planned research project should be agreed with the potential supervisor
- A post-doc mobility period cannot be funded if you completed your doctorate at the University of Graz

Application process
Step 1: Find a suitable field of research
On this website you will find information about all the institutes and faculties at the University of Graz – before you apply, please find out if there is a suitable field of research for you.
Step 2: Request invitation letter
Please contact the relevant institute in advance to find out whether there is a professor at the University of Graz who is willing to accept you as a post-doc. If you need help with finding a suitable supervisor, please contact staffmobility(at)uni-graz.at.
Please include the following information in your e-mail to the potential supervisor:
- Details of the scholarship programme you intend to apply for
- Curriculum vitae
- Research proposal (max. 3 pages)

Step 3: Research plan & written invitation
In consultation with your supervisor you must now draft a research plan; this is also needed for the scholarship application. Your supervisor provides the invitation letter for your application, written on official University of Graz headed paper, signed by the supervisor.
Step 4: Submit your application documents
Check that you have all the necessary application documents (see checklist) and submit your completed application by email as a pdf document to staffmobility(at)uni-graz.at

Selection process
Eligible applications will be subject to academic evaluation after the submission deadline. A selection meeting will then be held at which the best candidates for the scholarship programme will be selected. High academic standards are a deciding factor for successful applications.
Selected master’s and doctoral students will be registered as exchange students for the period of one semester at the University of Graz. However, you will not be awarded a certificate or degree by the University of Graz.

Scholarship grant
- Master’s and doctoral students: 900 euros per month and exemption from tuition fees at the University of Graz
- Post-docs: 1.200 euros per month
The scholarship is available for a maximum of 4 months, shorter mobility periods are possible.
Scholarship holders need to open an Austrian bank account to receive grant payments (unless the mobility period is only for one month) and upload account details to the online application system, together with a copy of their residence registration form (Meldebestätigung).
Preparing for the mobility
On the following page you will find information to help you plan for your mobility period at the University of Graz.
Post-doc scholarship holders will receive further information from their contact person (see right-hand column) about the mobility period.
Before the end of the mobility
Scholarship holders at master’s/doctoral level:
To ensure they receive payment of the final instalment of the grant, scholarship holders must submit the following documents to the Office for International Relations at least one month before the end of their stay. Templates are available through the online application system.
- Final report: with detailed information on the outcome of the research mobility, signed by the scholarship holder
- Evaluation by the supervisor at the University of Graz
The final instalment will be paid into the scholarship holder’s Austrian account after these reports have been checked.
Scholarship holders at post-doc level:
Before the end of the mobility period, and before the final instalment can be paid, scholarship holders must submit the following documents to the Office for International Relations:
- Final report: with detailed information on the outcome of the research mobility, signed by the scholarship holder and the supervisor at the University of Graz. Post-docs will be sent the relevant templates by email from their contact person.
