After we have informed the host institution that we have selected you for a stay abroad (= nomination), most host universities will send you an email with all the necessary information about the further procedure. You must now apply independently to the host institution.
You will receive information about the respective submission deadlines and documents from your host institution. Please inquire with the host institution in good time about what you need and by when you have to apply!
Before your stay abroad, you need an approved Pre-notification (Vorausbescheid) and a confirmed digital Learning Agreement. In order to be able to generate the Learning Agreement, you first need an approved Pre-notification (Vorausbescheid). If, during your stay abroad, you will only be working on your final thesis, you do not need a Pre-notification. You can start with the Learning Agreement immediately.
Important: If you do not generate a Learning Agreement and do not submit a Pre-notification (Vorausbescheid), we will withdraw your nomination to the host institution! Deadlines must be met!
Minimum academic performance abroad: Ideally, you will complete 30 ECTS per semester abroad, which will be recognized for your studies in Graz. This means that you should still have enough ECTS available when you go abroad.
The minimum academic performance is 3 ECTS per month of stay, which have to be recognized in Graz in the study field for which you applied for and with which you went abroad (this includes the study field and the level of studies). If you write your final thesis (master's thesis, dissertation) abroad, the ECTS credits will be awarded by the thesis advisor. In the case of free electives, you should bear in mind that these must be recognized for your studies. If you will spend the whole year abroad, your Pre-notification (Vorausbescheid) and your Learning Agreement must contain courses for both semesters already prior to your stay abroad.
You must provide proof of the minimum academic performance abroad before your stay with your Learning Agreement and Pre-notification (Vorausbescheid). If this minimum study performance is not fulfilled at the end of your stay abroad, a part of or the whole mobility grant must be returned.

Instructions for applying for the pre recognition document can be found on the respective Dean's Office/Audit Unit website:
- URBI
- GEWI
- Teaching Training Programme (in German only)
- REWI (in German only)
- THEO (in German only)
- NAWI
- SOWI (BA or MA, Studies, Recognition of examination achievements)
The above procedure applies to students whose main enrollment is at the University of Graz.
If you are enrolled at another higher educational institution in the “Verbund Süd-Ost” (teaching training programme), please apply for the Pre-notification at the institution where your main enrollment is.
If you are enrolled in a NAWI-Graz study program and your main enrollment is not at the University of Graz, please contact your main university to find out where and how you should apply for the Pre-notification. The „Liste der beantragten Anerkennungen, Vorausbescheid“ must always be sent to be processed to your „main university“ (Study field ID: UB …/…= Uni Graz, UF…/…= TU Graz), no matter in which system the Vorausbescheid was created (UNIGRAzonline or TUGonline).
In case of questions regarding the Pre-notification, contact your Dean’s office.
More on the Learning Agreement
After you have received the approved Pre-notification, you can create the Learning Agreement in Mobility-Online. You will receive instructions on how to do that per email. Please complete all the steps.
If you have any questions about the Learning Agreement, please feel free to contact us.
The deadlines for creating the digital Learning Agreement in Mobility-Online are:
- June 30, 2024 – if your stay starts in the winter term 2024/25
- November 15, 2024 – if you will be abroad in the summer term 2025
Important: If your host university has an earlier deadline for the DLA, then the deadline of the host university applies. Please send us this deadline. If your host university requires you to create the DLA (sometimes called OLA) in their system, please let us know as well. The DLA must always be created at the University of Graz, not at the host institution.
Important information for all students:
- In order to receive the top-ups (for example, students with fewer opportunities, see "financial aid"), additional documents are required.
- You will only receive the mobility grant for the time you physically spend at the host institution.
How to apply for the mobility grant:
- You will be informed by e-mail when the steps for the mobility grant become visible to you in Mobility-Online (MO).
- Enter the data for the mobility grant in Mobility-Online and confirm the completion of all data for the mobility grant application. In order to receive the mobility grant, the minimum study performance must be proven. The minimum creditable performance is 3 ECTS per month of stay, which must be recognized in Graz in the study program for which you have applied and with which you are going abroad.
- 30 days before your stay you can download your agreement from Mobility-Online. Print it out, read the agreement carefully and sign it yourself (pen + paper, exception - A-Trust ID Austria (Handy-Signature): in this case, you do not have to print out the grant agreement)
- Bring the original signed agreement in person to the Office of International Relations or send it by mail to the following address: Office of International Relations, Universitätsplatz 3, 8010 Graz, Austria. A scan is not sufficient! If you have signed the grant agreement with ID Austria, you do not have to submit the paper version.
- A few weeks after receiving the original, you can view the agreement signed by the Office of International Relations in Mobility-Online.
Double funding for one and the same activity from EU funds or grants directly funded by the BMBWF or other Austrian federal agencies is not allowed. Receiving an Austrian or foreign study grant, foreign grant or provincial grant does not constitute double funding.
Online Language Support
Online Language Support (OLS) offers you the opportunity to assess your language skills before your stay and to learn (new) foreign languages. OLS is part of the EU Academy platform, where other learning content (e.g. MOOCs) is offered in addition to language tests and language courses.
More information on how to use OLS will be sent to Erasmus+ students via email.
Insurance in the host country
You are not insured through the Erasmus+ program. You are responsible for suitable health, accident and liability insurance coverage abroad. If you have any questions, it is best to contact your current insurance company directly.
Through the paid ÖH-fee you are covered by accident and liability insurance during your stay abroad in many countries. Only accidents and damages that occur in the context of your studies are covered, not in your private environment. For more detailed information, please visit https://www.oeh.ac.at/service/versicherung.
Check if you have a valid "European Health Insurance Card" (EHIC). More information can be found here. In order to use the EHIC abroad, the data fields on the back of the e-card must be filled in completely. If the data fields are filled in with asterisks, it is not valid as proof of entitlement.
If you do not have a valid EHIC, apply to your health insurance provider for the issuance of a "certificate as a provisional replacement for the EHIC" in good time before your trip.
Living in the host country
Some host universities provide accommodation or support in finding suitable accommodation. Please inquire independently about possibilities in the host country.

Please make sure that you allow enough time to apply for your visa before your planned trip!
